Cardiff Met Archers today confirmed their first two returnees for the 2020-21 WBBL season.
Both Sarah Wagstaff and Laura Shanahan have committed to return to the Archers, with Wagstaff making this season her 17th with the club whilst Shanahan returns for her sixth.
“We’re thrilled to have Sarah and Laura returning for another season with the Archers,” said Head Coach Stef Collins.
“Both have a great deal of experience playing within the league and at international level with Wales. I look forward to seeing these two in the Archers jersey again and pushing us to new heights this year.
“They are valued veterans of our team who give so much of themselves for the benefit of our WBBL team and the women’s programme.”
Following the cancellation of the 2019-20 season, Wagstaff spent time developing her coaching, which she found greatly beneficial.
“I spent time watching webinars, sitting on Zoom calls, and learning lots from other people to keep developing my coaching,” said Wagstaff.
“I think this has been beneficial and encouraged greater collaboration between coaches which I have really enjoyed.”
But now, Wagstaff is keen to return to the court with her teammates.
“I’m looking forward to being back on the court in my Archers kit,” she continued. “We are tough and resilient, we commit to a rigorous schedule, are competitive and always aspiring to be better.”
Laura Shanahan will join her teammate Wagstaff on the court also, and she too is looking forward to getting back to ‘normality’.
“This has been the longest time I’ve ever spent away from a basketball court and away from any kind of normality,” said Shanahan.
“I’ve been able to keep myself busy and active during the lockdown so I’m eager to actually be able to step back onto a basketball court.”
