Leicester Riders secured a big 61-48 East Midlands derby win over Nottingham Wildcats in the WBBL Cup North Group on Saturday afternoon, behind a fine defensive display that saw their opponents connect on just 22% of their efforts.
Leicester had five players score in double-figures, paced by Kate Oliver’s 14 points, to which she added four steals and two blocks; while Holly Winterburn posted a double-double of 11 points and 14 rebounds, along with six assists.
After a competitive and scrappy first half befitting a high stakes derby, Riders came out fast in the second half to break the game open.
An 18-5 surge over six and a half minutes made the score 41-25, as Oliver scored nine of her points consecutively in an electric minute and a half spell.
Wildcats were briefly back within single figures in the fourth quarter, but a Winterburn ‘and-one’ play and another Oliver triple settled it.
The day’s other game, in the South Group, was cancelled due to a positive COVID-19 test in the Oaklands camp, resulting in a 20-0 forfeit win for Cardiff Met Archers.
