Former Union University (NCAA 2) and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (NCAA 1) standout Chelsey Shumpert has agreed to join Nottingham Wildcats for the 2018-19 season.
Shumpert transferred to Union from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where she played three years of NCAA basketball and helped lead her team to three Southern Conference Championships. She was also named first team All-Conference twice and second team All-Conference once.
Shumpert prepped at Paducah Tilghman High School, in Kentucky playing four years of basketball. She led her team to four district titles and was named MVP four times. She held the Kentucky basketball record for points in a career, among girls and boys, with 3,000 points up until 2017.
The 5ft 5in point guard played her final year of eligibility at Union, finishing the season with 856 points, to go along with her 131 assists and 214 rebounds.
“Chelsey seems like the ideal player for us at the moment,” revealed Wildcats’ Chairperson, Chris Prior.
“Much of our offense these last few seasons has come through Ashley Harris, but we recognised early in the summer it was almost going to be an impossible task to replace her inside threat.
“So, we have opted for a more perimeter approach and Chelsey certainly gives us that”.
Meanwhile the player herself commented: “I am blessed for the opportunity to play in England and fulfill my dreams of being a professional athlete.
“I am extremely excited to play for this club and I’m looking forward to working with the Nottingham programme.”
